A Portrait Photo YOU DON'T Want ... Blog

Ozzy Osbourne

We are a society obsessed with celebrities.

We are also a society that likes to know when other people incur misfortune ( we are glad it isn't us) - just look at the popularity of BUSTED magazine!

Put these two together and you get-
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/mugshots/celebrities

Answer these 3 questions:
1) who is someone you are surprised is on the list?

2) who has THE WORST looking mugshot?

3) who has the BEST looking mugshot?
(the best photograph does not necessarily the most attractive person...)

NAT GEO BLOG

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC DAILY PHOTOS

(click it)

I could spend all day at this site.

The galleries are limitless and the photos are stunning.

NAT GEO photographers get to travel the world and point their lenses at the most exotic locations on earth... It is the most COVETED job in photography...

QUESTIONS:

Where
do you think you'd like to visit (worldwide) and take photographs?

Where on earth, if you won the lottery, would you go simply because you've seen beautiful images from there?

NATURE and ARCHITECTURE assignment

DUE MAY 7th
WORTH 35 POINTS
(see grading criteria at the END of this post)

5 Nature Photos
+ 5 Architecture Photos
----------
10 photos in total!
(...not counting the original, unedited images...)

You can choose WHICH 5 nature and WHICH 5 architecture shots that you want to do and you'll be turning in 5 of each- Make sure you RENAME each shot NATURE 1,2,3,4,5 and ARCHITECTURE 1,2,3,4,5 before your turn them in...

The FOLDER you are creating for this assignment (and turning into your DP TURN IN FOLDER) should be called NATURE AND ARCHITECTURE and don't forget to do the purple evaluation sheet and turn it in when done!

INCLUDE a sub-folder within your folder for the ORIGINAL, unedited photos- Call this "ORIGINALS"

THE PROJECT SPECIFIC QUESTION IS: WHICH photographic genre was more successful for you? NATURE or ARCHITECTURE? and WHY?

THE POSSIBLE NATURE SHOTS:

1) NATURE PANORAMA - this is a photo collage made up of at least 4 individual, overlapping photos. I will show you how to use PhotoShop in class to assemble this.

2)NATURE CLOSE UP - use the macro lens to show us a close up, intimate look at the natural world. An interesting texture, a normally unseen detail, or a peek into a smaller microcosm.

3) NATURE BUG'S EYE VIEW - use the camera lens to get the perspective from an insect. Don't forget, aside from the interesting angle, this photo should have a clear subject matter- what would a bug be looking at?

4)NATURE TAKING OVER - this shot should focus on nature reclaiming it's territory- Ivy overtaking a fence, moss covering a mailbox, a weed breaking through the cracks in a sidewalk.

5)NATURE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT- How does man affect his world? Sometimes he destroys nature, sometimes he controls it, and sometimes he proves to be a good steward of natural resources. What is your opinion? Can you express it in a picture?

6) NATURE WILD LIFE - Find a wild animal, make it your subject. Insect, bird, rodent, beast- This should not be a domesticated pet photo.

7) NATURE SKY - Sunset, sunrise, clouds, stars, it might not seem like it all the time, but there is alot going on up there...

8) NATURE BEAUTY - This is pretty open ended. A beautiful picture of nature makes us all a little more appreciative of the world we live in.

THE POSSIBLE ARCHITECTURE SHOTS

1) ARCH EXTERIOR - Quite simply, this is the outside of a man-made structure.

2) ARCH INTERIOR - An interesting look at the inside of a structure (or a section of it).

3) ARCH DETAIL - This is a close up on a single feature of a man-made thing. The knob on your barbecue, The twist of an iron gate, a fire hydrants bolt... Get close to something, really look at it, and then photograph it's most compelling detail.

4) ARCH SIGNS - Take a photo of a sign. The older the better. The more uncommon the better. Does the location mean anything? The message? Look out for flash glare on this one!

5) ARCH DECAYING STRUCTURE - This is a photo of something man-made that is in disrepair, it's falling apart. Document this item/building that once had a functional use and is now only good for the occasional photographic assignment :)

6) ARCH WINDOWS - This is a photo about a window, through a window, or maybe using a window to frame something.

7) ARCH INFORMAL BALANCE - Whatever is on the left side of the frame should be BALANCED by 'something different' on the right side. Visual weight is a product of intensity of COLOR, scale or SIZE, and density of DETAIL.

8) ARCH LEADING LINES - The lines, walls, beams, fence posts, railroad tracks, sidewalks, siding, or supports LEAD YOUR EYE to a rewarding subject matter.

GRADING CRITERIA:

1) CREATIVITY and ORIGINALITY- this is YOUR work- you looked for, and found, interesting photos in various locations that fulfilled the assignment.

2) COMPOSITION - your work shows a thoughtful consideration of what is arranged in the frame.

3) FOCUS- details are clear, selective focus is obvious if it is used.

4) ALL PHOTOS NEED TO BE EDITED IN PHOTOSHOP WITH THE Brightness/Contrast TOOL (as demonstrated in class)

5) NO PEOPLE! we will be doing plenty of assignments involving people, try and keep people out of this one!

DOG BLOG.... fashion?

Take a look at these ANIMAL FASHION pictures-

POSHPUPPYBOTIQUE

What level of education/skill/training do you think the photographers for this site possess?

Do you think YOU could control animals enough to get them to 'pose' for you?

Would it be easier or harder to pose/control a dog or a person? (I won't even ask about a cat...)

Would you ever consider PAYING someone to take a good portrait of your pet?
